We are a three-generation, family-run company that started in the late 1970s. Our journey began with the launch of Weight Watchers Margarine and Cheese, followed by Smart Balance Margarine — both pioneers in heart-healthy food innovation. After selling those brands, we had time on our hands and health and nutrition on our minds. Everything about our company was based on healthy living and that passion compelled our creativity.

Even at 82, my father, Bob Harris,  wasn’t ready to slow down. Driven by curiosity and decades of experience, he set out to discover the next breakthrough in health-focused foods. After extensive research and in-depth conversations with food scientists across the country, he discovered something remarkable — an exclusive and patented grain called Onyx Sorghum.

This led us to a partnership with researchers at Texas A&M University’s Agricultural School, where Onyx Sorghum was developed and patented. What makes this grain so special?

First, Onyx Sorghum is exceptionally rich in antioxidants, containing more antioxidants than any fruit or vegetable found in the supermarket and even more tannins than red wine.

And Second, Onyx Sorghum Supports healthy blood sugar levels, naturally slowing sugar absorption, making it an excellent choice for people managing pre-diabetes or diabetes.

Interestingly, farmers once avoided growing dark, high-tannin sorghum varieties because the livestock that ate them became too lean — a clue to how metabolically powerful this grain really is. That discovery caught our attention, and from that moment on, we knew we were onto something extraordinary.

We’ve been dedicated ever since to sharing this incredible grain with the world — continuing our family’s mission to make healthy living simple, natural, and accessible for everyone at a fair price.

Since that moment, we’ve worked tirelessly to become experts in cultivating this ancient grain.  Sorghum is the key ingredient in all our Grain Berry Cereals, Pancake, and Muffin Mixes.

From the very beginning, we’ve grown our own Grain Berry Onyx Sorghum and Bran Sorghum ourselves. It’s the only way we can be sure that we always have the purest, freshest, non-GMO, and gluten-free grains.

Thanks to my father Bob, we’re two decades into our journey making Onyx Sorghum the cornerstone of all our natural and healthful Products. With excitement and enthusiasm for his work, Bob shared his passion every day until he was 96 to make sure that our Grain Berry customers and farmers were cared for.  This passion was his business and now his vision is mine…family owned, and family operated. Today we continue to work tirelessly to create quality products worthy of your family table because after all, nothing is more important to us than a healthy family.
